Sunday School at St. John's Episcopal Church
Flushing, Queens, New York

Our Sunday School program is based on the following passage from the Apostle Mark 10:13-16:

"People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them."

Sunday School Mission:

Premised on the above passage from the Apostle Mark, our Sunday School Mission at St. John's Episcopal Church, Flushing is focused on:
  • Providing a dynamic, vibrant and loving environment within which a child can learn about the tenets of Christianity, cultivate lasting friendships, and have fun.

Currently our Sunday School  hour begins as the Eucharist sermon starts when the children are asked to go their Sunday school classroom downstairs .  Our children’s program uses the Episcopal Church Curriculum and introduces the classes to our faith through the reading of  the Holy Scripture, learning Bible stories, church history, and being encouraged to ask questions about God and the world.

During the Sunday School hour, children learn to sing and  read music. Whether they will eventually join our Choir or ever sing in a choir at all, they will be better prepared to raise their voices and participate in congregational singing. We also use the Sunday School hour to train all children as acolytes to explore our Episcopal service and traditions. Throughout the hour-long class, the children are fully engaged and encouraged to think of church as a fun place where fellowship and worship are intertwined.
