Concert for Typhoon Victims:
An Opportune Time for Sharing

Last October 2, 2009, typhoon Peping (international code named Parma) pummeled Northern Luzon triggering massive flooding, landslides and considerable loss of lives.  This was just eight days after typhoon Ondoy [code named Ketsana] dumped torrential rainfalls that inundated Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

The response of local and international organizations/institutions  to appeals for aid/assistance  towards search, rescue and rehabilitation efforts for typhoon casualties in the most severely hit provinces in Northern Luzon - Benguet and Mountain Province - was just stupendous, to say the least.  For one tracing his/her roots to the BIBAK provinces of Northern Luzon, the fund-raising efforts of organizations such as  BIBAK-NE, I-Golfers, BIMAK-DC,  the Igorot Global Organization [IGO] and St. John’s Episcopal Church Congregation and their friends, can only be a source of pride, joy and inspiration.

Based, however, on news reports as well as  internet and/or text messages from relatives and friends of typhoon victims received by some folks here in the East Coast United States, it will take quite some time for those adversely affected to bring their lives back to normalcy. It will take time and money to rebuild houses, reconnect electricity and water; buy basic necessities such as pots, plates, blankets, clothing, beds, furniture and food. It will take some time  to reconstruct lost documents such as land titles which they can use for borrowing funds to reconstruct their houses and buy basic necessities.

In response to the continuing appeal for help for typhoon victims in the disaster areas in Benguet and Mt. Province, a concert dubbed Sounds of Hope: A Cantata for Recovery” is currently being organized, under the auspices of St. John's Episcopal Church, Flushing, Queens, New York and St. Luke's and All Saints Church, Union, New Jersey.

Scheduled for December 5 at All Saints and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and on December 12 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, the net proceeds of the two events  will be channeled through  the Philippine Episcopal Church Dioceses involved in rehabilitation efforts in Benguet and Mt. Province.

Mary Ann Dalde and Marjorie Laoyan Longid gladly volunteered their choir-directing talents to the concert. Not only does this entail taking off from work  but also commuting to and from choir practice venues in New York and New Jersey as well as hosting choir practices which, in the hosting tradition of Filipinos,  include preparing food or snacks for the choir members.

More than a dozen folks responded positively to this humanitarian effort by volunteering their choir singing talents.Like Mary Ann and Marjorie, these choir volunteers have already been cutting on their usual sports, social and/or work related commitments so as to be able to attend choir practices.  Others who could not join the choir, for one reason or another, gladly offered to host choir practices in their homes in support to the rehabilitation efforts for the typhoon victims.

Raul Taganas and his band volunteered to entertain concert attendees in the December 12 schedule with guitar and song renditions during the snacks time following the choir performance. Tony and Ching Trinidad, likewise, volunteered to teach/lead  line dancing and/or ballroom dancing after the concert. Due to previous engagements, however, Tony and Ching can only volunteer their talents for the December 12 concert.

Quite a number of ladies have volunteered to act as ushers during the concert dates aside from selling concert tickets to relatives, friends and officemates. By the way, concert tickets are selling for only  $10.00 per ticket [$15.00 at the door].  Considering the musical extravaganza presentations [concert + snacks (which could become a full blown dinner) + guitar and song renditions + line and ballroom dancing lessons + BIBAK cultural dances], that $10 [$15] per ticket is coming out to be a grossly discounted price. Nevertheless, here’s hoping concert attendees will generously share their blessings to this humanitarian fund-raising effort.

For more information on how you can share your talents, time or treasure, please contact the Very Rev. Dario Palasi [Phone:347-249-4158] or Fr. James Kollin [908-688-7263]. You may also contact any of the choir directors: Marjorie Longid   [phone: 516-582-6180] or Mary Ann Dalde [646-206-7889].
